Your works are full of inspirations and it's a lot of risk taken before considering the right stuff and proceed further, learning a lot from you, I was wrong about the idea to start with a larger amount of land in the beginning and find it hard to handle later. Also I thought a lot of machinery are required for the startup but I know now how plan and go ahead, keep your works up man, wonderful homesteading.

Is it cost effective to raise our own meat chickens and pay someone to process them? How hard is it to find someone to process? How much do you think we would pay per bird?

I panic bought meat chickens as well... butchered 125..plus 3 turkeys. My gardens failed, for most part this past year...due to husband's brain injury..no time. No place for hogs, still live in rural town. Already have chickens, turkeys pre ordered..building raised garden beds, hi tunnel this year. Want to sell seedlings, eggs, then veggies later on.

It seems like your 1 1/2 acres is just enough to do what your doing. I hope you can build a couple of out buildings, eventually. Many of us are essentially trapped (in these times) in apartment buildings. I love the homesteading awesome people so much. IMO you are keeping alive, a sane way of life that will be the wave of the future, when our world gains equilibrium, again. I think the world of all of you.

I was diagnosed 4 years ago and for the first time since that diagnosis, we got some really wonderful news at the end of 2020. Surgeries, radiation, hyperbaric treatments and a whole lot of worrying. Luckily I was about a year away from retirement when I first found out, so in December 2018, we sold most everything down near Charleston, SC and retired to western NC. We have a little place outside of town with a garden and some egg chickens and are the most content we've ever been. I've talked about pigs and meat chickens, but the wife is not into us butchering something she would see as a pet. I'm still working on that. Great video. Enjoy the snow tonight.

So true chickens are a gate way drug! I started with a dozen chickens when I was 7 now 16 and completely run on my own in the last year 100 pheasants 30 rabbits 50 pigeons 5 pigs 130 chickens 30 chuckars 4 turkeys 6 quail and 4 ducks.

BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION is you need lots of land to raise your own food. I've grown in abundance on 1/4, 1/2 and now on 1 acre. SURE! I'D LOVE MORE PROPERTY. but i can move chickens and pigs just fine in 1 acre. i almost have all the fruit trees i want. i have all the berry vines. a few grape vines. i raise and process chickens some i hatched for meat. i have a small greenhouse to start seeds in and protect small plants. it's the do with what you have. right now no goats but will start again next year. have had goats 30+ Yrs. and am finishing four wethers. a friend who is a butcher is going to teach me. Im unsure on cutting. don't feel stuck... just plant
