Jason and Lorraine. In 2016 we sold most of our belongings and left the city in southern California to start a small homestead in the mountains of North Carolina. We left the city in search for a more minimal and intentional life. We became passionate about growing our own food and knowing what exactly is in our food after I (Jason) became diagnosed with cancer. Now 8 years in remission we as a family are on a journey to live our passions.
We document our life on UZpost videos to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and not be afraid of change. We started our own online general store where we have available the things we make and use in real life. Thank you for following us on this incredible life changing journey!

I have the best luck with whole potatoes and I get my potatoes from a local store and I chose smaller potatoes with multiple eyes. This is the first year I am planting home saved potatoes which were the smaller potatoes for what I harvested last year.

My son just bought two acres in a place called conover NC. he's working for the Apple data warehouse there after working for the one here in Fremont CA for a couple years. He's 42, single, not interested in homesteading (yet) the property has no house or anything on it. I'm very nervous for him. he's looking for an rv or something to live in while his house is built. he's getting one of those kits.

One way I saw that was cool was people cut the bottom off of a trashcan and they put it on top of the bed and fill it up with the dirt and plant in there and then when it’s time to harvest you just lift the trashcan up and everything falls out of the bottom and most of your potatoes are exposed so you don’t have to go digging for them.

maybe try not "burying" the potatoes. Just cover them. Then as they peek thru the top add a little more soil, and repeat 3 more times at about 2-4 inches at a time. Starting over is scary. I feel ya. I will be moving from Michigan to the south (starting in Kentucky) in about 2 more weeks. Getting my motorhome some new brakes & trying to organize what I should bring with me in my tiny space that's available in the nooks & crannies in the motorhome. Besides my home canned foods, store bought foods, seeds to grow something when I find a place. A few tools to build & repair things, my clothes & my dog. It's going to be an adventure for this Grammie/great Grammie of 60 yrs old. I hope to srart a UZpost channel for my family to watch my adventure too. CONGRATULATIONS on get the silver play button for 100K subscribers! That I will probably never get but I am so very happy for all the families that have made it so far. It's a lot of hours of work to get that award.

have you thought of growing in old tires ? I cut half of the sidewall out half way between the beed and the tread . Set the first of 5 tires filled with compost and plant 3 to 5 sweet potato starts , then when they have grown about a foot , add another tire and fill it with compost . Repeat for 5 or 6 tires . The vines will spill over the sides of the stack and hide the stack of tires . one year I got a bushel of sweet potatoes from a stack of 5 tires .

We did containers as well with photos, onions, and garlic, and we did it that way so we can have more room in the beds to grow more. Where hoping it does good as well.
Paul Morris

Normally container spuds are restricted to 2/3 spuds as they are heavy feeders,They require lots of water and should be topped up with soil as they grow./You might find you need to dust your cut potatoes with a fungicide to stop them rotting if that's happening, If you have a lot run a rotovator though new soil and plant in rows, then earth up as we call it as the shoots break the surface as the new potatoes grow on these shoots so need to be protected from greening, In new soil that will provide enough nourishment for one years but you should be rotation the growing plots each year , It is possible that the compost you put on them can be too rich or new and that stops them from growing, as does lack of water, Great news on your award, you deserve it .

WooHoo! Congratulations, you deserve this and life change for you was quite a journey. I have simmering multiple myeloma and I can attest that changing your diet really does good for your health. Did you put some kind of block under your beds (like hardware wire or weed cloth. I have so many underground hungry animals that I put both in some of my beds. I lost artichokes for 2 years and then put the cloth down and the then so many artichokes.

Try putting uncut potatoes ON the soil and cover them with 8 inches of hay or straw. Add more if needed later in the season. At harvest time most of the potatoes will be on the surface with a few you’ll need to lightly dig. I did a 20’ foot bed in 15 minutes. This method require very little water. Then let ducks roam in the garden supervised to take care of slugs.

I have never seen potatoes grown successfully when first planted deeper than about 4 inches, often only 2 inches deep. As they shoot upward you can add soil or mulch or straw around the stalks until they are up to 10 inches deep or so. You might try an experiment with a few pots with differing depth of planting.
Patrick Oy oldin
cornish cross _do_ feather out if you keep them long enough, but not before the usual harvest time -- it's one of the reasons I don't to raise them -- they are unnatural to suit man at the expense of their health. I think it's inherently animal cruelty to raise cornish cross. I'm so happy you're raising the reds again. To me it's an ethical choice. If you raise animals for food you should do it naturally and ethically giving the animals a good life. I don't think there's anything ethical or natural about the poor cornish crosses.
