About:
Jason and Lorraine. In 2016 we sold most of our belongings and left the city in southern California to start a small homestead in the mountains of North Carolina. We left the city in search for a more minimal and intentional life. We became passionate about growing our own food and knowing what exactly is in our food after I (Jason) became diagnosed with cancer. Now 8 years in remission we as a family are on a journey to live our passions.
We document our life on UZpost videos to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and not be afraid of change. We started our own online general store where we have available the things we make and use in real life. Thank you for following us on this incredible life changing journey!

Raccoons kill for sport as well as food. Lost lots of chickens to them. Coons will tear heads off. Birds try to carry them off. They eat the guts first most digestible protein. Yes coons can fold their paws and reach in.

Ahhhh! The predators! We have them all here! We also have an eagle. Coyotes are the ones that scare me because they are so sneaky! Be safe! Stay warm! The Best Is Yet To Come! Journey On!

Yum, curry! Cool chicken brooder design. I'm excited to see how you complete it! Yay, you finally captured a critter on your trail cam! I'm excited for you guys to move on to a different piece of land. You've done a lot with what you have. The steep slope has been a challenge so I'm hoping you find land a bit more accommodatng.

I would love to see more cooking episodes! Winter is a great time to enjoy what you worked for all the rest of the year. I am so excited to be finally seeing Azure Standard building routes to my area! I jumped on the chance to be a drop coordinator. Any advice for those of us going it alone and/or getting started in new communities? Have you ever considered starting a project co-op? A regular meeting place for people to exchange building supplies and gardening/livestock equipment or even garden seeds? Buying in bulk is cheaper but sometimes you just don't need it all.

I have been seeing racoons, possums, foxes, coyotes, screech owls, hawks all in my yard. Lost on chicken to the fox. My neighbor lost a chicken to the racoons. I am much more careful to put the chickens up every night.

Owl definitely for the headless animal, the duck was definitely a raccoon they are very smart and can clean out a chicken coop. They can open and close zippers or latches too. When mama coon is feeding babies they will eat in excess and when she is training babies to find food they will clean out a whole coop in one night. They love corn or spilt food so putting excess on the ground for the chicken might not be a great idea. Once they find a food source on your property they just keep coming back so trapping them and removing might be your only option. Good luck!

Had a weasel get one of ours. Make 2 puncture wounds in the neck. On our chicken tractor we laid an apron of just chicken wire around it every night and a few rocks holding it down to deter any predators from digging under.

You have a creek and you could very well have weasels. They will get a chicken/duck by the neck and kill it, then just leave it. It's like they suck the blood. We had a weasel problem and had to trap them. Raccoons and skunks will kill chickens and ducks too. Opossum don't very often eat chickens. They love ticks and are actually good to have around. We have them and they don't go after out chickens. Coyotes will and if you are around any timber, you probably have a lot of them. We got two mini donkeys to guard our goat herd and have not had any problem with any predators what so ever in the last 5 years. We still hear coyotes, but they are about 2 miles away. Our nearest neighbor has chickens and has told us since we have gotten the donkeys, (which are so sweet and easy to care for being small) they have had no more trouble with coyotes coming after their chickens. :)

Raccoons are not your friends, they will come back to eat the rest of the chicken and duck that it killed.

Yes it would be the same racoon. I watched a documentary on them. Cant remember what its called... I think there's one on UZpost/Netflix. They are fascinating animals. Anyways... they stay within a perimeter of one area. They are territorial and wont cross over into other racoons area/ perimeter. They migrate through the same multiple routes they create within that area. So I think its safe to say that is the culprit. Happy hunting!

I've honestly lost count of how many chickens we lost due to predators. We have skunks, opossums, raccoons, hawks, coyotes and you really gotta watch out for the snakes when you have chicks. Sad but in the end we always end up with ZERO bird. The first year was so great but every year after that has been a total loss. We will try again!

Raccoons and their grabby hands. That's why we use hardware cloth and not chicken wire for our coop. Raccoons can reach in chicken wire and grab chickens by the neck....and they dont let go.

I have the land and one building delivered and waiting on the weather to get building number 2 to be delivered and I need to get fencing up for the birds. Making tiny home cabins off grid. But anyway.... thank you! I’m 60 and making a total life change thanks to you and a few others! BTW, get a goose. They take care of the owls. Much WV Love and Many Blessings to you and your family! Lol, you do know by now that chickens are not bothered by electric fences. Do birds not sit on power lines? Yes! My girls will squeeze thru the very much hot electric poultry net fence at will and never be bothered. I have watched them many times. I know the fence is hot because of the few times I forgot it was on and touched the netting! Whewee, light up ones life and knock you down! The netting hits coon hands, dog noses ( my pup 🐕 learned the hard way to leave the fence alone;yulp, yulp, yulp! 😄.

are you allowed by law in your state to kill predators that are destroying your livestock or garden. i heard art say he could kill a deer for eating his apple trees. the dead deer not to eat, just terminate and make deer compost.

Live trap with a honey bun. They can't resist. Raccoon kills and eats on the spot. Hawk or owl pull the heads off. Fox/coyote grabs the bird and takes off with it leaving a feather trail. Fox often just slings it up on its back while holding it.
