Jason and Lorraine. In 2016 we sold most of our belongings and left the city in southern California to start a small homestead in the mountains of North Carolina. We left the city in search for a more minimal and intentional life. We became passionate about growing our own food and knowing what exactly is in our food after I (Jason) became diagnosed with cancer. Now 8 years in remission we as a family are on a journey to live our passions.
We document our life on UZpost videos to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and not be afraid of change. We started our own online general store where we have available the things we make and use in real life. Thank you for following us on this incredible life changing journey!

I leave mine on Monday & get home on Saturday. Big water bowl. 2 feeders, sometimes neighbors check on them. Gathers some eggs. I have 2 dog runs for them. Have plastic chicken netting overhead. Biggest problem is the sparrows eating all their feed. I calculated maybe 15lbs chicken go through & sparrows eat 20+ lbs. Next biggest problem is the occasional river flooding

Q: How does the automatic coop door know (ie how do you know) all the chickens are inside when it closes at night? Do all your chickens automatically go inside at dusk every night? PS: I love the bucket with the cups! very cool.

This has been so helpful!!! I just put in my automatic door. Mine is from the company that makes Omlet cages. I need to get feeders and watering buckets. Thanks for the information. I am a teacher, I have to feed everyone before I leave. The feeders will help and the auto door which I started yesterday will be a tremendous help. I like the separation you have with meat birds and the fancy chickens. That fuzzy and Bernice look like lots of fun. I have one like Bernice. She is a bossy little thing. I may at some point add 2 fancy birds for fun. Our birds are for eggs. I have 5.

👍👍👍. LOOKS like Bernice earned her stars for 3 days unsupervised and no wild parties so next you can do 5 or 7 days and someone local to check up on them a few days. We all know how teens are when parents gone and animals are the same as I know from experience. We didn’t have electric gates just a well made coop and a dog that guarded it all. Bite first ask questions later was her motto 😅😂🤣. After 3 years on our place and having all types of animals except pigs at the time we decided to take kids on a “field trip” across USA for 4 weeks which became 6 weeks. Didn’t plan on an accident on way home. We had a few AG Colleges close by and a Spring Summer vacation for most students. There are students who want the experience of managing a farm or ranch and can’t afford to go home all the time so they come and live in your home. Best decision we ever made cuz they WANTED to be with animals and anything else you offered. Plus they have their professors to call upon if they need help. No cell phones back then just we’d call every other day to check in and they had our calendar to call ahead and leave messages. Our couple could milk our few goats and were also horse trainers cuz we were down to 25 and one due. They sat for us again the next year when parents killed in accident and we had to handle the 500 acre family farm to sell it and divide everything among the remaining family. I had no interest moving to Ohio then but looking back I keep wondering “what if?” So glad you tried time away. You live where history is all around you and Penelope would love to see the heart of our country Wash. DC especially. My kids all got an A in History when back in school a few weeks late. That trip was worth it for sure and the sitters still visit us on their vacation from being Vets. A great video sharing what real life farming is all about when you need a mental break and a look at what is around you for inspiration for you creativity part of your mind. Hope Lorraine’s parents found that it’s a great thing to live near family and see new places. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

3 years ago I was asked to look after my ex boss's fiance's chickens when they went on vacation. Then a year later he got some chicks and asked if I would help take care of them. I said yes. Ever since then I have been helping him take care of his chicks each year and the chickens when they go away on vacation. I also feed and water the barn cat, and some other cats that used to hang around his family's old farm, which got sold last year and now a warehouse is being built there. Out of the last batch of chicks this year, I have a couple of chickens eating treats from my hand. LOL I bought "Grubblies" to give them a treat. each time I give it to them I shake the bag a few times, then give them 3 handful for a treat. Well 2 chickens have gotten to like the treat so much they want to be the First ones to get the treat. Every time I shake the bag all the chickens turn their heads to look at me and those 2 come running across the pen and fly up and land on the edge and will even set on my arm and stick their heads into the bag to try and get to the treats. LOL I agree, have a friend, relative, neighbor, or a homesteader friend look after you animals on your homestead when you go away for a day, 2 days or even more. Even if you go away for just the day it is good to have someone check on your animals and make sure everything is A-okay. Also by having someone stop by and heck on everything, it might just prevent a break in. that happened to someone I talked to a few years ago when I stopped in to the Farm Bureau store. The person I was talking to while I waiting to be taken care of, said while she was gone for a couple days she had a friend take care of her animals for her. The one day her friend noticed a car in the driveway. Her friend car her asked if she was expecting anyone and said no. Her friend called police and the police arrived and caught the 2 individuals trying to break in to the house.

You could also put up an outdoor security camera that hooks up to you phone and check on them and it can be used to see any predators.

Have you thought about fermenting or soaking their feed? I soak/ferment mine and just dump it in a rubber feed bowl and it last 3ish days for 12ish chickens

@Sow the Land I volunteered for a bird rehabilitation center during my undergrad and that toy reminds me of those days! I was always wanting to give our longer term residents something to do to prevent boredom which can slow down their recovery process.

It's very easy to be able leave Chickens especially in the fall. Summer is harder because of eggs. But usually you can find someone to collect eggs especially if they can keep them. Always nice to get away. Hope you had great time. God Bless and Peace Be With You All

With all the DIY projects available today, or the products available to purchase, there is no reason someone with just chickens/fowl can't leave their home to go on vacations. Now if you have other animals it can be managed for small trips without a farm sitter too. But I would not suggest more than a day or two without a farm sitter. Animals seem to find trouble after a couple of days unattended.

With Christmas around the corner, I’ve been wondering how my family will be able to go out of town and still have our chickens safe and cared for. Thanks for posting this video on how your family manages animals and still takes a vacation. I’ve got everything you mentioned except the automatic door opener. Gonna ask Santa for one of those 😉

Solid advice as always! They are definitely one of the easiest homestead animals to leave alone for a few days. Large waterers and feed buckets like yours paired with an electric fence and youre good to go.
